The article focuses on the scientific and pedagogical activity of an outstanding representative in the field of music theory of the first half of the twentieth century Sergei Vasilievich Evseev (1984–1956). During his period of work at the Moscow Conservatory many different reforms in music education were introduced. The author of the article shows that being an opponent of the “historical-theoretical complex” method, Evseev developed a special course “Fundamentals of Russian Harmony and Polyphony” and introduced an original approach in training professional musicians, based on the unity of knowledge of academic music tradition and folklore, and relied on practical experience and modern scientific knowledge.
