Abstract
The article is devoted to the events that took place in China during the emergence and formation of professional musical education. The author focuses on the activities of Dr. Xiao Yumei as one of the founders of the first higher musical educational institutions in China, as well as a methodologist, public figure, and composer. Xiao Yumei sought to find an organic combination of Chinese and European cultural traditions. The author draws special attention to the history of the Shanghai Conservatory foundation.
